Gabor Lacko, United Kingdom


Gabor Lacko of the United Kingdom died on June 1, 2023. Gabor was a Holocast camp survivor, who was born in Hungary in 1931. His family had to move into the Debrecen Ghetto within 72 hours of the German occupation of their town. They were later taken to Strasshof in Austria, Sitzenberg-Reidling and then to Vienna, where Gabor worked in an anti-aircraft gun factory. Liberated by the Russians. Gabor became an engineer and moved to England in 1956. Gabor was an electrical engineer, specializing in electronic instruments and power supplies. Gabor and Patricia Spero had an artistic woodturning partnership for over 10 years. They worked only in sustainable English woods and made purely decorative objects which are firstly lathe turned by hand, then carved, pierced and sometimes colored. They were inspired by nature, using the colors and shapes of leaves and trees throughout the seasons to express the beauty of the natural world.
