Walter Smith,
80 of New Sharon passed away
Thursday evening, April 21, 2022 at the Mahaska Health Partnership
Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa.. Walter Paul Smith was born on
February 21, 1942 to Albert and Katie Marvel (Carter) Smith in
Oskaloosa, Iowa. He graduated from New Sharon High School with the class
of 1960. After the sudden death of his father in August of 1960, he
quickly became a fulltime farmer taking care of his mother and sisters.
On July 9, 1966, Walter married the love of his life, Peggy Hull of
Montezuma at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, and they enjoyed 55
years together. To this union two children were born, Llewellyn and
Damon. After 25 years of farming, he joined Vermeer in Pella and worked
there for 19 years. Upon retirement, he had audited more than 20,000 hay
balers. Walter was a hard worker and loved his family very much. He had
a great sense of humor and an immense amount of knowledge across a wide
array of subjects. His greatest gift was his ability to work with his
hands. He was a master of tools, being able to fix anything or create
something new. He was a truly gifted artisan of woodworking, making many
family treasures. Above all, he loved and cared for his family
immensely and will be missed by all who had the opportunity to know him.
Walter was also a longtime member of the New Sharon United Methodist
Church.
He will be remembered by his wife Peggy Smith of New
Sharon; his sons, Llew (Laura) Smith of Morton, IL and Damon (Elizabeth)
Smith of Minnetonka, MN; his seven grandchildren, Megan, Mitchell,
Allison and Adam Smith all of Morton, IL, Drew Smith of Minneapolis, MN,
Katie (Jake) Jochim of Hopkins, MN and Suzy (fiancé, Evan Ruesch) Smith
of Minnetonka, MN. He is also survived by his two sisters, Barbara
Chapman and Carol Edwards.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents.
